Your last dog wasn’t like this. Your schedule has gotten crazy. Not to mention the neighbors. Or your health. You’re not sure what the answer is, but you know you can’t keep living like this. Something just isn’t working. This doesn’t seem healthy for anyone.
We’ve all felt that feeling. Maybe a few lucky ones have only had perfect dogs fall into their lives. That must be wonderful. We will smile at their good fortune, because we’re not envious types, but know that’s now how things usually work. Most dogs haven’t mastered house-training within 26 hours. Most dogs will chew on occasion, and bark more than that. And the jumping and the mouthing… it’s like they looked inside your soul, found the one activity that annoys you above all else, and are now repeating it over and over and over.
This doesn’t mean things are hopeless. It doesn’t mean you can’t give the dog a good life, or that she can’t make your life fantastically better. The world is not always fair. Some dogs are a little more challenging. Some dogs are a little more maddening. We play the hands we’re dealt. Maybe the vet told you “that’s just the way she is.” That she’s too stubborn to learn. Too hyper to pay attention. Just too much to handle.
Nonsense. Things can get better and things will get better. Whether chewing, nipping, peeing, barking, ignoring… or leash aggression, barrier frustration, sound sensitivity, fearfulness or aggression…. puppy, adolescent or adult. Solutions are not instant, but the relief of knowing you’re on the right track can be.
