I hope you’re as excited for Fall as I am… Anyways, here are some interesting dog training tidbits from the past month…
- Yes, dogs can wash out of service dog work for being too friendly. (And yes, these dogs are often put up for adoption.)
- The Central California SPCA is using social media to increase adoptions. They do a great job on social media. I’ve also worked with some GREAT dogs from there.
- A firsthand account from a Fresno homeowner on finding out many of the plants in their new yard were toxic to their dog. If your dog is having some mystery health issues, or seems off, this is worth investigating.
- A new documentary on the process of raising guide dogs for the blind. They followed five dogs from puppyhood to see if any would successfully graduate to service work. From the article, “Guide dog training is extremely competitive. Even most dogs specifically bred for the task don’t end up making the cut.”
- A long article on dog bowls and health concerns, summarizing recent research. It suggests we should we should use stainless steel water bowls and wash them regularly with soap or in the dishwasher, for both our health and our dog’s sake. Otherwise the dog bowl becomes one of the most bacteria-ridden places in the house.
